O'Brien scores fastest 2011 World Cup century

BANGALORE: Irish middle-order batsman Kevin O'Brien Wednesday set a 2011 World Cup record by hitting the fastest 100 in just 50 balls, with six mighty sixes and 13 fours against England at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.

Coming into to bat at the fall of Gary Wilson with the score at 111 for 5 in the 24th over, Kevin was involved in a 162-run sixth wicket partnership with Alexander Cusack, who scored a breezy 47 in 58 balls, with one six and three fours.

Kevin broke the previous record of fastest 100 in the 2011 World Cup held by Sri Lankan Mahila Jayawardene, who reached the three-figure mark against Canada Feb 20 at Hambantota in Group A league match. —IANS
